This amazing organization got its start in San Diego in 1991 as Fresh Start Surgical Gifts. With the laudable goal of building a community of healthcare organizations and surgical volunteers they ensure that every child with a physical deformity receives medical care regardless of ability to pay. In 2010 the group partnered with the Plastic Surgery Foundation to take this mission nationwide. Fresh Start Caring for Kids Foundation began operations at the University of Chicago in 2015 and we hit the ground running! One of the first cases included a three stage tissue expansion to reconstruct a giant nevus of the arm for an angelic 7-year-old.
Shown here is Dr. Dickie with White Sox legend Jermaine Dye who volunteers his time to help fundraising for the charity and Dr. David Song who was then Chief of Plastic Surgery at the University of Chicago. Dr. Song was instrumental in bringing this collaborative effort to the city of Chicago. I’m honored to take part in the mission of bringing expert surgical care to children in the Chicago region who have physical deformities but lack the insurance or economic means to access care otherwise.
